Alain Resnais’ Night and Fog is a documentary about concentration camps during the Second World War. It was one of the first documentaries that used the Nazi’s own footage from the war. Resnais commented on his film in Richard Raskin’s book Nuit et Brouillard: “There have been many films made about concentration camps and people say they are good even though they never made any impact on people. Because I’m a formalist, I decided to crosscut between black and white images and images in colour. I didn’t want the film to say “Don’t forget!”. I’m not interested in that, I wanted to say “Try to understand why it is happening and think about it before it happens again”. The film attacks the forgetfulness through juxtaposing of colour images from the downfall of Auschwitz and cruel black and white images from the Nazi archive. Night and Fog is considered to be one of the most influential documentaries in film history.
