Jerzy Kawalerowicz’s Night Train is psychological thriller set on a train heading north to the Baltic seaside in Poland. A young man (Leon Niemczyk) claiming to be a doctor, boards the night train. The train is overcrowded and in this situation he needs to share sleeping arrangements with a secretive young woman (Lucyna Winnicka). Neither of them wants to start any small talk, and both seem to be hiding something. Soon it is revealed that the police are searching for a murderer.
Night train is a nice homage to Alfred Hitchcock. Hitchcock made several film involving trains, such as The Lady vanishes (1938) and Strangers on a train (1951). Still, Kawalerowicz’s Night train (1959) is considered as one of the “best train films”. The film has a well-composed soundtrack, nicely captured images of passengers in 3rd class wagons that range from singing girls to catholic nuns and plot full of suspense. Kaunas International Film Festival is proud to present Night Train in the “Train time” section.
