What would film be without music? The organisers of Kaunas International Film Festival confidently shake their heads – film can not exist without music, and present a special programme Nordic Sounds in Film dedicated to composers of film scores. Next weekend, Kaunas will be visited by three film composers from Iceland, Sweden and Norway. They will meet festival viewers and invite them to listen to some live music.

Tomas Tengmark, producer of the programme of Kaunas Film Festival says: “Nordic Sounds in Film will focus on film scores and composers that are often underappreciated in film. Soundtracks can give a film intonation or remain “invisible”. Film music ranges from orchestra pieces to a capella songs determining the entire feel of the film. We would like our viewers to keep their ears open to the music played in films and find out how it is born.”

The meeting with the three composers will take place October 3 in art gallery 101 at Vytautas Magnus University (Laisvės Ave 53). Festival viewers will meet Erik Enocksson from Sweden who has already visited Lithuania two years ago and has received the artistic achievement award of Kaunas Film Festival for the music score of the film Falkenberg, Farewell. This year, he will introduce Skinnskatteberg, a film recording of his live performance in the background of Swedish forest.

Another guest, Johann Johannsson, is a composer from Iceland who has worked with film industry for many years. An entire festival programme could be assembled of his films, but this year’s festival will screen an Icelandic film Wrestling with Johannsson’s music.

The festival will also be visited by the Norwegian composer and musician Ola Kvernberg, whose music score can be heard in Kaurismäki style film North. The rising Norwegian star will come to Kaunas with his entire band called Ola Kvernberg Trio and will give a live concert on October 3 in the “Liberty Pub” (Putvinskio St 48). The sounds of a violin, double bass and drums will give the festival some jazz flavour.
