“Ausgetraümt” – the latest film by Deimantas Narkevičius – premiered in the spring of 2010 at London’s Tate Modern gallery. The word ausgetraümt has no direct translation; it means a state between dream and reality just before waking up. It is the title of a song performed by the young Lithuanian rock band “Without Letters”. The film includes scenes of the young musicians playing and answering the questions about their future visions, their international career ambitions, and reflecting on political and cultural issues. These shots interweave with wintertime cityscapes of Vilnius. This short musical film is about naiveté and idealism. These two features are essential for anybody having creative ambitions, especially in such an adverse cultural environment, where music has never been fully developed as a form of self-expression.
