Screen tests for commercials provide the – unintentionally humorous – foundation of Peter Tscherkassky’s “Coming Attractions”. Created in years of painstaking, frame-by-frame work in the darkroom, some fine specimens of the most underappreciated genre in cinematography, advertising film, and its surreal scenarios are reinterpreted in a playful way. “Coming Attractions” addresses T. Gunning's concept of a ‘cinema of attractions’. It touches upon the exhibitionistic character of early film, the undaunted show and tell of its creative possibilities, and its direct addressing of the audience.
