CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS Kaunas IFF Film Journalism Workshop 2011
As an observatory member of the NISI MASA network, Kaunas International Film Festival has a big pleasure to present it's first upcoming film journalism workshop, which will take place from 28th of September to the 3rd of October, during Kaunas IFF.
We are looking for ten young film critics from Europe countries between age of 18 and 25 to participate in this film criticism workshop lead by Boyd van Hoeij, freelance film critic, well known for his articles in Variety, Winq, Mate and etc. Participants will get free tickets to all festival screenings, additional events and attend intensive workshop after which as a final result each of them will have to present three reviews analysing films of the Kaunas IFF 2011 programme. This workshop will be a preperation for the first Nisimazine workshop to be held at the Kaunus International Film Festival in 2012.
All reviews will be published online on the official Nisimazine website on a special Kaunas IFF Nisimazine blog. Also some of the articles will be translated into Lithuanian for local cultural press. This is a great opportunity to improve your skills in film journalism, to be advised by a profesional film critic and spend a pleasant time with people from around Europe with the same interest during Kaunas International Film Festival.
About the tutor Boyd van Hoeij:
Boyd van Hoeij is a freelance film writer. He contributing critic to U.S. trade paper Variety, the film editor of Winq (Netherlands) and Mate (U.S./U.K.) and a regular contributor to International Film Guide (U.K.), Filmkrant (Netherlands) and indieWIRE (U.S.). His work has been published in ten languages including Estonian, Romanian and Chinese . His book 10/10, about ten contemporary Francophone Belgian directors, came out in September 2010.
About Kaunas IFF film journalism workshop:
The workshop will open with an introductionary lecture to film reviewing and exemplary film reviews.
Later, in five sessions workshop will cover topics of:
-How to read reviews
-Analytical skills / How to talk about films
-Writing for different audiences (blog/newspaper/academic/trade)
-Practical part: Boyd van Hoeij will help with reviewing films. He will bring some shorts and you will watch a couple of films from the festival programme, afterwards you will write reviews for it.
Also there will be one long session going through one entire film brought by Boyd van Hoeij and discussing it scene by scene.

Travel & accomodation
Participants will share a flat in the centre of Kaunas. Symbolic cost per one night is around 10 euros each person, travels and food is on participant's expenses. There is also a possibility to stay for free in a couchsurfing-like way if participants accept. All of them will have free entrance to all the screenings and festival's events.

It must be sent until the 22 of August via email to [email protected]. It should consist of brief CV in English and two short reviews of resent films as well in English. Participants are kindly asked to bring their own laptops if possible.
