In 1986, Roy Andersson received an inquiry from the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare on making a film about AIDS. He accepted the assignment after some hesitation. The disease was said to be incurable, deadly and, among other things, sexually transmittable, which was a factor that might further consolidate the hostility towards sexuality that we after centuries looked to be liberating ourselves from. Meant to be an educational film, “Something Happened” was rejected by the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare because of its darkness and controversy. The film wasn't officially shown until 1993.
