Kaunas International Film Festival invites to the screenings of Oscar awarded Iranian film - “A Separation“. The drama directed by Asghar Farhadi was introduced to Lithuanian audience at Kaunas IFF festival last autumn and will be screened at “Skalvija“ Cinema Centre in Vilnius from the 17th of August.

“A Separation” (“Jodaeiye Nader az Simin”, 2011) is a touching story about the choices in lives and the human values such as love, responsibility and dedication.

The film tells a story of wedded Simin and Nader who are balancing on the edge of their marriage. Simin, looking for better opportunities for their 11 year old daughter, is willing to leave the country, yet Nader objects. He feels responsible for looking after his ill father.

Although the plot seems to be quite basic, it drags the audience into a vortex of moral, psychological and social questionings. When writing “A Separation” Asghar Farhadi did not intend to excuse or judge any of the film characters. “But you, the audience, can choose. You can say, this character is better than the others, and what he does is right.”, says the director.

When analysing dilemmas where personal and family values conflict together with tradition and religion, Asghar Farhadi manages to unveil the situation of nowadays Iran and the existing differences between the social classes.

The drama won the Oscar for the best foreign language film in 2012. At Berlin International Film Festival in 2011 “A Separation” received the Golden Bear award for the best film and two Silver Bear awards for the best actress and the best actor. At the Cannes this year Asghar Farhadi and his production team won an inaugural prize founded by MEDIA Programme and received a grant for a new film production in Europe.

“A Separation” will be screened between August 17th and September 19th at “Skalvija” Cinema Centre and September 20th - 30th at “Pasaka” cinema.
